Big Parser gave hackers an overview of Big Parser, including a fun example where they searched up Korean movies about dogs! We learned the benefits of Big Parser compared to other common spreadsheets, like Excel and Google Sheets. We were also taught how to use Big Parsers API and use Data Wrangler to integrate data.
Break Into Tech
Alice Shi from MakeSchool explained the details of internships and computer science programs after high school. The workshop was specifically targeted towards seniors, but many underclassmen attended and gained valuable insight. For example, we learned that there were specific programs that were targeted towards rising college freshmen, and the differences between internships at large companies versus startups.
Cup Stacking
A competition was held to find who could stack the highest cup tower! The winners received portable battery chargers.
Gotta Code ‘Em All: Beginner Coding Workshop
In this workshop, you can learn the basics of using Swift to create your own code. Using Swift, you can learn how to make an iOS application, and individual topics such as loops, variables, and case sensitivity are talked about.
Intro to Android
Appian helped students work to create an app that works through Android servers, learn all components of the app such as intents, backgrounds, and processing, and build a button and having the button react.
Intro to Git
This was a hands on workshop which had an ultimate goal to have each student add facts about themselves to the presenter repository. We did this by making downloading the repository to our personal computers, and then modifying the file and uploading it. We learned a lot about GitHub, which will be helpful for HackTJ and computer science in high school and college!
Intro to React
With the help of Appian, students learned to build modern and clean UI (user interface) using React js. We will walk through the concepts of React, and using React and Firebase to build a live chat application. React is a basic UI used for designing interfaces, allows different management on different UI components. Students learn the basic components that need to change when a new message pops up on a live chat messaging app
Palantir Game Session
The coders took a break with four rounds of fun trivia, the first two were about Palantir, the company hosting the workshop, and the last 2 were pop culture and music.
Phone2Action
Phone2Action exposed students to their product and informed them about how organizations can use to acquire and engage in supporters, Mobilize their supporters, take action at events and connect with officials from state, etc., use social media or call elected officials to share actions, sign petitions, take surveys, etc. and call to action method, invokes an immediate response, includes call for advocates to join campaigns
Embedded Programming with Raspberry Pi
In this workshop, the intricacies of different electronic devices were explained, including Raspberry Pi. Aspects such as electronics, linkage to computers, and pins of the Raspberry Pi were talked about. Along with this, web browsing security was also talked about, and how any device can capture packets, and the need for encrypted messages. This workshop offers an introduction to the use of interesting devices such as Raspberry Pi in your project!
Ruby on Rails
Although this workshop was about Ruby on Rails, we also received an introduction to website development, including HTML, Javascript, and CSS. Kevin Deisz, the presenter, also created a simple website to show us how to design and style our websites for HackTJ. He also weighed the pros and cons of various languages.
Typescript: Write Safer Javascript
Razorx2 showed students that is important while coding projects and programs to always have a safe code that works quickly and efficiently. In this workshop, students are able to learn some of the packages that support this idea.
Tip Calculator: Intermediate iOS Workshop
Using Xcode, students learned how to make a basic tip calculator with the guidance of Make School. The use of swift was explained while making the set up and code for a simple app that calculates tip with user input.
Women In Tech Panel
In this workshop, women from differnt companies sponsoring the hackathon spoke about their jobs and working its in the tech field as women. They spoke about their starts in computer science and working towards the place they are today.
